Wurst aka Hot Dogs

Nürnberger Bratwürste were the highlight of breakfasts in Hamburg last summer. We would stay at the Hafen Hotel again just for their sausage. I'm not sure what kind of Wurst in a bun the street vendor in Leipzig sold but that was good too, especially the bun.

For many years I've been looking for the perfect hot dog in America. When I worked at South Chicago Hospital School of Nursing I would try out a different hot dog stand every lunch time until I found the Skyway Hot Dog Hut. Those hot dogs are 150 miles from Kalamazoo so it was important to find some closer.

A while ago I read an article on hot dogs which rated Nathan's as the best so we looked for that brand everywhere and finally spotted it at a family meat market in Kalamazoo. Nathan's are so good that we eat them plain on a bun without anything else to detract from the taste. The label reads, "Nathan's skinless beef Franks, bigger than the bun". They stick out on either end of the average size hot dog bun. I wonder if Nathan's ancestors were from Nürnberg.

  1. H and I just saw a new New York deli about 3 miles from the house last week. They had a sign on the building Nathan's Hot Dogs. I guess we will try them now that you confirm their greatness. Love R and H

  4. Morgan and I like Dairy Queen's Chili Cheese Dogs so I bought Oscar Meyer Beef hot dogs and a can of chili and some shredded cheddar cheese. I have yet to make them. Hope they will be an acceptable alternative to going to DQ. L.S. P.S. I think Skyway Hot Dogs has the best Chicago style Hot dogs.
