Over the River...

We crossed over the Suwannee River at about 11 a.m. this morning.  The Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park on the Suwanee River is a wonderful place to visit.  In the main building are dioramas depicting scenes from his songs and his music is played continuously on a carillon.

"Beautiful Dreamer" has been a family favorite for about 100 years and I have a special memory of an old German gentleman who recognized that I was an American tourist and pulled out a harmonica and played "Oh, Suzannah" for Elisabeth, Andreas and me in the parking lot of a castle near Dresden.

We're headed for our "Old Kentucky...er...Motel" tomorrow.

Do you have a favorite Stephen Foster song?

  1. "Way Down Upon the Suwanee River" because Dad would always break out in chorus with Mom when we crossed it on our way to Miami to see Grampa, Flossie, Uncle Ralph, and Aunt Gertrude. I then continued the tradition when we drove to Florida with the boys. You'll probably get some snow on the ground in Tenn & Ky. Be careful.
