Pickin' & Patchin'

Once upon a time I had a blind date with a widower in which his conversation inevitably turned to his late wife. She loved him so much that she picked the white specks out of his lunchmeat so cholesterol would not block his arteries.

Fast forward: Today the concept of a donor slice of bread was invented in our kitchen. This is how it works. When a piece of rye bread has holes in it, take a piece of white bread and make patches for the holes. In this way the cheese does not escape when you make a grilled cheese sandwich. You might ask why white bread patches in rye bread? It is a simple matter of economics. Sara Lee day-old white bread costs 70 cents a loaf and day-old Hearty Rye costs $1.50.

So whether you are a cholesterol hater or a cheese lover, enjoy your next sandwich, especially if it was picked or patched with love.

  1. Fun to be back and glad for the patched sand hint. I need to find a day-old bread store. Love R and H
